Your Home Environment Affects Your Mental Health

I find that what helps me, when I feel a bit down about an area of life that I can’t do much about, is to change my physical surroundings.  The spaces you spend a lot of time in can have a significant impact on your well-being—both physically and mentally. Kolmac Outpatient Recovery states that “A peaceful and visually appealing home setting can create a greater sense of wellbeing than a cluttered, chaotic home. The color of your walls and furnishings can affect your mental health. Color can affect a person's mood, behavior, and even cognitive function.”

Are you tired of walking into your home or certain rooms in your home and getting a down feeling? Are you bored with the way your rooms look and have looked for years? When it comes to giving your home a bit of an upgrade, simply changing or freshening the color of the walls can have a profound effect. Since we spend most of our time in our kitchen, bathroom and office, providing a modern fresh look in any of those areas can have a significant impact on the way you feel when you’re in those spaces. Consider doing any or all of the following:

  • Put a fresh coat of paint on the walls

  • Change the color of your cabinets

  • Swap out plumbing fixtures or cabinet pulls

  • Change out door knobs

  • Replace light fixtures
